About Khalil Mamoon

Khalil Mamoon (often shortened to KM) is an Egyptian shisha brand that's been making hookahs in Cairo since 1873. They are, in many ways, the original — one of the oldest shisha makers in the world, and the name most hookah lounges across the Middle East have been running for generations.

Every KM is handmade. The stems are stainless steel fusion-welded by hand, often wrapped in worked brass or copper. The bases are hand-blown and often hand-painted. Because they're made by people and not machines, every pipe carries small variations — uneven welds, slight engraving differences, tiny glass irregularities. Those aren't defects. They're the signature of the handmade process.

KM pipes come as complete setups. A standard KM order includes the stem, glass base, hose, Egyptian clay bowl, coal tray, and all the grommets needed to put it together. Almost every KM is a single-hose pipe — that's the traditional Egyptian form. Models run from the compact Safari (22 inches) up to full-size Plus and Shareef pipes (30+ inches).

KM pipes pull tight, smoke flavour-forward, and pair best with traditional tobaccos like Al Fakher, Nakhla, and Mazaya. If you want a pipe with history and character behind every weld, this is the brand.

Common questions · Khalil Mamoon

Who makes Khalil Mamoon hookahs?
The Khalil Mamoon family workshop in Cairo, Egypt. The brand was founded in 1873 by Khalil Mamoon (also spelt Khalil Maamoon), and the company has stayed in the same family for over 150 years. Every pipe is still made by hand in Egypt by the same workshops that have been doing it for generations.
What is Khalil Mamoon best known for?
Handmade Egyptian hookahs with a tight, flavour-forward draw. The hand-welded stainless and brass stems, hand-painted glass bases, and stamped KM branding are the hallmarks. Their pipes aren't the prettiest or the most precise on the market - they're the most authentic. That's the whole point.
Why are Khalil Mamoon hookahs priced higher here than elsewhere?
Two reasons. First, every KM we stock is 100% genuine - handmade in Egypt, imported direct from the Khalil Mamoon workshop. Counterfeits and grey-market copies come in cheaper online, but they aren't real KMs. Second, we ship the glass base separately from the stem on almost every KM order - it stops the base breaking in transit. That doubles our shipping cost, which we cover so your pipe arrives intact.
Can I use modern bowls and hoses with a Khalil Mamoon?
Yes. KM pipes use a standard Egyptian bowl port, so most modern phunnels and traditional bowls fit fine with the included grommet. Any silicone hose works on the hose port. A lot of enthusiasts keep the original KM hose for character and swap to a silicone hose for daily use - both work.
What's actually included with a Khalil Mamoon hookah?
The standard set: stem, base, bowl, hose (or mouthpiece), and grommets. Some models also include a base rubber and tongs. That makes it a complete setup - all you add is charcoal, foil or an HMD, and your tobacco. Check the individual product listing to confirm exactly what's included with that model.
How do I know I'm getting a genuine Khalil Mamoon?
Genuine KM pipes carry the KM stamp on the stem and often on the tray and bowl. They come from authorised Egyptian sources and arrive with their traditional packaging. Counterfeits appear in grey-market channels and usually show off proportions, cleaner-looking welds (ironically - machine-made ones are too perfect), and missing KM branding. Buy from authorised retailers.
