What charcoal should I use?

Charcoal is the heat source. It sits on top of the bowl, over foil or inside a heat management device, and slowly warms the shisha so it produces smoke. Get the heat right and everything else falls into place.

Two broad types. Natural coconut charcoal is the standard: clean taste, low ash, long burn, but you need a burner or stove to light it (a flame alone will not do it). Quick-light charcoal lights straight off a flame for convenience, but it burns faster and can carry a slight chemical note, so most regular smokers move to coconut.

Shape and size. Cubes are the all-rounder and run from 22mm up to 31mm, where bigger cubes hold heat for longer. Flats and hexagons sit lower and spread heat across the surface, which suits flat bowls and HMDs. Match the cube size to your heat management device for the best fit.

Most boxes here are 1kg. Always light coconut charcoal fully, every side glowing with a light grey ash, before you set it on, and use tongs rather than your fingers.

About this collection

Shisha and Hookah Charcoal

Explore our full range of shisha and hookah charcoal, the foundation of every clean, consistent session. From premium natural coconut coals to quick-light options, every product here is chosen for even heat, low ash and a longer burn. Whether you run a traditional clay bowl or a modern heat management device, the right charcoal sets the tone for the whole bowl.

We stock the coconut coals serious sessions are built on, including Tom Coco, Al Duchan and Shaman. Most naturals here are 26mm cubes, the size that balances heat and control for a standard bowl, with 25mm and larger flats and logs available for bigger clay setups. A single 1kg box holds roughly 72 cubes, so a three-coal session works out to around 24 sessions per box.

The Premium Way ships shisha charcoal Australia wide from Melbourne, with fast dispatch and free delivery on orders over $150. Order online for delivery to Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, all in AUD with tracked shipping.

Shisha Charcoal FAQs

Coconut charcoal or quick-light: which should I use?

Natural coconut charcoal burns cleaner, lasts longer and gives the most even heat, so it is the choice for a proper session at home. Quick-light coals light in seconds from a flame and suit travel or a fast, casual bowl. For everyday sessions we recommend natural coconut.

How many coals do I need per bowl?

Most bowls run well on two to three 26mm coconut cubes. A traditional clay bowl usually takes three, while a heat management device often needs only two to three depending on the model.

How long does a coconut coal burn?

A quality 26mm natural coconut cube burns for around 45 to 60 minutes, so a full box of cubes covers many sessions before you need to reorder.

Common questions · Charcoal

What's the difference between natural and quick-light charcoal?
Natural coconut charcoal needs lighting on a stove for 5–8 minutes but burns clean without chemicals or taste. Quick-light charcoal is chemical-treated to self-ignite with a lighter in about 30 seconds - convenient for travel but it adds a harsh chemical taste that carries into your session. For regular use, natural is the only real option.
How many coals do I need to start with?
Two to three 26mm cubes for HMD setups, or three hexas/sticks for foil. Start with higher heat and let the coals settle - light them on a stove for 5–8 minutes until fully glowing, place them on the bowl, then wait another 5 minutes before your first pull. Think of it as preheating the BBQ.
Do HMDs and foil use different coals?
Same natural coconut, different shape. For HMDs like the Kaloud Lotus, cubes are the go-to - they fit cleanly inside the basket and deliver even heat. For foil or heat screens, hexas and sticks work better because their longer profile spreads heat across the bowl surface instead of concentrating it in spots.
What size cube should I start with?
26mm. It's the size we recommend for most setups - long burn time (around 45 to 60 minutes), solid heat output for a full-sized bowl, and enough mass to stay consistent through the session. 25mm works for smaller bowls; 22mm suits solo sessions or very small phunnels.
What's the difference between cubes, hexas, flats, and discs?
Cubes are the all-rounder and best for HMDs. Hexas (hexagonal prisms) are longer and spread heat more evenly across foil - ideal for foil and heat-screen setups. Flats burn hotter but shorter than cubes. Discs and quarter-circle shapes are made specifically for Kaloud-style HMDs and lock into the basket. Shape-match to your setup.
Which charcoal brands are worth buying?
Shaman, Cocosupreme and ShishaDoc are the three we consistently recommend. Shaman and Cocosupreme are solid all-rounders: clean burn, low ash, consistent heat. ShishaDoc runs cooler, which makes it the best pick for sensitive or delicate shisha blends where you don't want to scorch the flavours. Skip anything quick-light for regular sessions.
