What is a shisha pipe?

REF · 01

The pipe is the body of your setup. The bowl sits on top, the base holds the water, and the smoke travels down the stem, through the water, and out the hose to you.

How to choose a shisha pipe

  • Height: taller pipes suit a lounge and group sessions; shorter pipes suit small tables, solo smoking and travel.
  • Base: a wide base is more stable; a slim base is easier to pack and carry.
  • Hoses: single-hose is simplest and most common; multi-hose lets a group share one setup.
  • Style: modern stainless is low-maintenance and sealed; traditional is hand-finished for a classic look.

Complete the setup with our bowls, hoses, heat management devices and charcoal. Order before 2pm on a business day for same-day dispatch from our Melbourne warehouse.

Common questions · Shisha Pipes

Is a hookah the same as a shisha?
Yes, same apparatus - different names. "Hookah" is the more common Western term; "shisha" is Arabic (literally "glass"), used across the Middle East and increasingly in Australia. Some people use "shisha" to mean just the tobacco and "hookah" to mean the pipe - context usually makes it clear which is meant.
How much water goes in the base?
Rule of thumb: at least an inch of the downstem submerged. From there it's a tradeoff - more water adds restriction and brings out more flavour; less water gives an opener, smoother draw. Start with the downstem covered by an inch and adjust to taste: if the draw feels too tight, pour some out; if it feels too loose or harsh, add more.
Do I need to buy a bowl and hose separately?
Depends on the listing. "Complete setup" can mean different things - some include a bowl, some include a hose or mouthpiece, some are stem-and-base only. Always check the individual product page before ordering; the listing spells out what's in the box. Flavours are always a separate purchase regardless.
What size hookah should I get?
For home use, 60–75cm is the sweet spot - big enough to look substantial, small enough to fit on most coffee tables. Portable and travel pipes (30–45cm) are lighter and easier to pack but pull slightly tighter. Tall show-pieces (90cm+) are more about presence than performance.
Single hose or multi-hose?
Single hose for most people - simpler, easier to maintain, less fiddle. Multi-hose makes sense if you regularly share with three or four people who each want their own hose. The downside: every hose port not in active use needs a stopper or the draw breaks down. Solo multi-hose sessions rarely justify the complexity.
What makes a hookah pipe worth the price?
Construction and airflow. A well-made pipe - proper welds, tight grommet seals, clean bore inside the stem - pulls consistently for years. A badly made one develops pinhole leaks, loose joins, and off-flavours from rough metal inside the stem. Price alone doesn't guarantee quality, but reputable manufacturers rarely sell anything in the bottom tier.
