Shisha Essentials

What Shisha Accessories Do You Need?

A shisha setup isn't just the pipe, bowl, and coals. The small accessories between those main pieces make the session work — the rubber seals that hold everything together, the tools that move hot coals safely, and the burners that light them.

Grommets are the rubber or silicone rings that seal every connection — base to stem, bowl to stem, hose to stem. If one is loose, cracked, or the wrong size, air leaks in and the session goes flat. Different pipes take different grommet sizes, so keep spares to match your setup.

Natural coconut coals need a proper heat source — a lighter won't do it. Electric coil burners are the common choice: plug in, place coals on the coil, wait five to eight minutes. Gas stove-top burners do the same job and suit portable use. A charcoal holder lets you move lit coals from burner to bowl safely.

None of this is glamorous, but a bad grommet or flimsy holder ruins a session faster than bad coal.

Shisha and Hookah Essentials

Shisha essentials are the core hardware every hookah needs: a bowl, a hose, heat management and charcoal. This is our curated starting point, the gear our Melbourne team reaches for to build or refresh a setup, shipped Australia wide.

Stock the parts that matter most. For bowls, phunnel bowls suit longer sessions while clay holds heat well; pair a good bowl with a reliable heat management device and quality coconut charcoal, then finish with hoses, tips and grommets for a tight, comfortable draw.

  • Bowls and phunnels for even, controlled heat
  • Hoses, tips and grommets for a tight, comfortable draw
  • Heat management devices and coconut charcoal for steady coal control
  • Cleaning tools and everyday accessories

Frequently asked

Questions about Shisha Essentials

What do I need besides the pipe, bowl, and coals?
At minimum: three grommets (base, bowl, hose), a pair of tongs to handle lit coals, and a way to light natural coconut coals — either an electric burner or a gas stove-top burner. A small metal coal holder or basket makes transferring hot coals from the burner to the bowl safer and easier.
How often should I replace my grommets?
Replace any grommet that's cracked, flattened, or no longer sealing cleanly. Rubber grommets harden and lose their seal over time; silicone grommets last longer but still need replacing if they tear. A wobbly bowl or a base that keeps slipping is usually a grommet problem, not a pipe problem.
Are hookah grommets a universal size?
No. Bowl grommets, base grommets, and hose grommets all come in different sizes, and pipe makes vary. Traditional Egyptian pipes take different grommets from modern German or Russian pipes. Match the grommet to the specific connection point and pipe style — a too-small grommet won't seal, and a too-large one won't fit.
How long does it take to light coals on an electric burner?
Five to eight minutes for natural coconut coals on a 1000W coil burner. Flip them halfway through so both sides catch, and wait until they're glowing red all the way through with a light grey ash forming. Underlit coals taste harsh and won't hold session heat.
Electric burner or gas stove-top burner — which is better?
Electric is easier and safer for regular home use — plug in, place, wait. Gas stove-top burners are faster and more portable, which suits travel or outdoor sessions, but they need ventilation and careful handling. For a single home setup, an electric 1000W coil burner covers most needs.
Do brand-name grommets and burners actually perform better?
For grommets, fit matters far more than brand. A correctly-sized generic silicone grommet will outperform an expensive one that doesn't match your pipe. For burners, wattage and build quality matter — 1000W coil burners from reputable brands light coals evenly and last years; cheap units burn out fast or heat unevenly.
