Tongs & Pokers

What are Shisha Tongs and Pokers?

Tongs and pokers are two hand tools every shisha session needs. Tongs are metal pincers that grip hot coals without you touching them — like smaller BBQ tongs. Pokers are thin metal spikes that punch clean holes in aluminium foil.

Fully lit coals burn at around 500°C, far too hot for bare hands. You use tongs to move coals from the burner to the bowl, and to rotate them mid-session so the shisha heats evenly. A poker punches foil holes that a toothpick or skewer can't make consistently.

Length matters more than style. Tongs under 15cm put your knuckles too close to the coals — look for 18–22cm with a sawtooth grip that holds cube coals securely. Thin metal deforms over time; stainless steel lasts.

If you're using a heat management device (HMD) like a Kaloud Lotus, you don't need a foil poker — the HMD replaces foil. You still need tongs. There's no shisha setup that doesn't need tongs.

Shisha Tongs and Coal Pokers

Every great session starts with the right tools. Our range of shisha tongs and charcoal pokers gives you clean, safe control over your coals from first light to last puff. Built for coconut and quick-light charcoal alike, these hookah coal tongs let you place, turn and lift hot pieces with precision, while a sharp poker keeps foil and heat management dialled in. Choose from stainless steel, matte black and heavy-duty finishes to match your pipe and your setup.

One tip from behind the counter: match your tong length to your setup. Longer tongs suit deeper bowls and taller pipes, keeping your hand well clear of the heat, while shorter tongs give more control on a compact setup. And keep a dedicated poker for foil and heat screens, using tong tips to pierce foil bends and blunts them over time, so a purpose-made poker gives cleaner holes and lasts far longer.

The Premium Way stocks tongs and pokers from established shisha and HMD brands, shipped fast from Melbourne to Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and right across Australia. Whether you are refreshing a home setup or kitting out a lounge, these are the small accessories that make a big difference to every bowl.

  • Shisha and hookah coal tongs in multiple lengths and finishes
  • Charcoal pokers for foil, heat screens and coal handling
  • Stainless steel and heavy-duty options for daily use

Shisha tongs and pokers: common questions

What are shisha tongs used for? Shisha tongs let you pick up, place, turn and lift hot charcoal safely, moving coals on and off the bowl without burning your fingers and keeping your heat even through the session.

Do I need both tongs and a poker? Most setups use both. Tongs handle the coals, while a poker pierces foil, clears heat screens and nudges coals into position. They are the two core tools for managing heat cleanly.

What length tongs should I get? Longer tongs suit deeper bowls and taller pipes and keep your hand clear of the heat, while shorter tongs give finer control on a compact setup.

Frequently asked

Questions about Tongs & Pokers

Are shisha tongs different from BBQ or kitchen tongs?
Yes. Shisha tongs are shorter — typically 18–22cm — and have thicker, grippier ends designed for small cube coals. BBQ tongs are too long and loose for precision work on a small bowl. Kitchen tongs bend under repeated heat and don't grip small pieces reliably. A proper pair is a cheap, session-long upgrade.
How often should I rotate the coals during a session?
Every 10–15 minutes, or whenever one side of the bowl starts tasting harsh. Coals burn down unevenly — the side facing inward heats faster and the shisha there scorches first. Rotating brings fresh heat to the cool side and lets the overheated side cool down. It's the single biggest factor in whether a session lasts or dies after 20 minutes.
Do I need tongs if I use a heat management device?
Yes. An HMD like a Kaloud Lotus replaces foil, not tongs. You still need tongs to transfer the lit coals from your burner onto the HMD, and to rotate them inside the device mid-session. The only thing an HMD saves you is the foil poker.
What length tongs should I buy?
18–22cm (7–9 inches) is the sweet spot. Under 15cm puts your knuckles too close to the coal — you'll get singed hairs on your first session. Over 25cm starts to feel clumsy for fine positioning on a small bowl. If you're unsure, err longer rather than shorter.
Sawtooth, hammer, or plain-tip tongs?
Sawtooth for cube coals — the teeth grip the square edges securely, so nothing drops. Hammer tips work better on flat hexagonal or stick coals since their grip surfaces are wider. Plain-tip tongs look cleaner but drop coals the moment you angle them. For most setups, sawtooth is the default.
Do I need a separate poker if my tongs have one built in?
Not for casual use. A built-in poker on the end of a tong handle does the job, just with less precision. If you run foil regularly and want cleanly spaced, identical-size holes every time, a dedicated poker with a single fine point is worth the small extra spend. HMD users skip pokers entirely.
