Frequently asked
Questions about Shisha & Hookah Charcoal
What's the difference between natural and quick-light charcoal?
Natural coconut charcoal needs lighting on a stove for 5–8 minutes but burns clean without chemicals or taste. Quick-light charcoal is chemical-treated to self-ignite with a lighter in about 30 seconds — convenient for travel but it adds a harsh chemical taste that carries into your session. For regular use, natural is the only real option.
How many coals do I need to start with?
Four 26mm cubes for HMD setups, or three hexas/sticks for foil. Start with higher heat and let the coals settle — light them on a stove for 5–8 minutes until fully glowing, place them on the bowl, then wait another 5 minutes before your first pull. Think of it as preheating the BBQ.
Do HMDs and foil use different coals?
Same natural coconut, different shape. For HMDs like the Kaloud Lotus, cubes are the go-to — they fit cleanly inside the basket and deliver even heat. For foil or heat screens, hexas and sticks work better because their longer profile spreads heat across the bowl surface instead of concentrating it in spots.
What size cube should I start with?
26mm. It's the size we recommend for most setups — long burn time (around 60–90 minutes), solid heat output for a full-sized bowl, and enough mass to stay consistent through the session. 25mm works for smaller bowls; 22mm suits solo sessions or very small phunnels.
What's the difference between cubes, hexas, flats, and discs?
Cubes are the all-rounder and best for HMDs. Hexas (hexagonal prisms) are longer and spread heat more evenly across foil — ideal for foil and heat-screen setups. Flats burn hotter but shorter than cubes. Discs and quarter-circle shapes are made specifically for Kaloud-style HMDs and lock into the basket. Shape-match to your setup.
Which charcoal brands are worth buying?
Shaman, Cocoshisha, and ShishaDoc are the three we consistently recommend. Shaman and Cocoshisha are solid all-rounders — clean burn, low ash, consistent heat. ShishaDoc runs cooler, which makes it the best pick for sensitive or delicate shisha blends where you don't want to scorch the flavours. Skip anything quick-light for regular sessions.
